William Gairdner
William Gairdner has had a busy life as an athlete, an academic, a businessman, and latterly, as a successful author. As a young athlete, Bill competed in the decathlon at the Pan-Am Games in Brazil and at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, and then in two Commonwealth Games (Jamaica, 1966, and Edinburgh, 1970), in the 400 metre hurdles event. After earning a number of higher degrees, including a Doctorate in Literature and Philosophy from Stanford University, he taught at York University in Toronto, and then decided to pursue a career in business, from which he retired in 1988 to devote his time to writing. In quick succession, he produced a string of bestselling books, including The Trouble With Canada, and The War Against The Family. He was then the managing editor of Canada's Founding Debates - an historical landmark. On the heels of this he published The Trouble With Democracy, and also The Book of Absolutes. Then, looking back over twenty years, he published The Trouble With Canada…Still! His most recent book is The Great Divide: Why Liberals and Conservatives Will Never, Ever Agree. At this crucial time in our history, William Gairdner presents fresh and daring insights for all who strive to understand the successes and failures of Canada, and of western civilization as a whole.
